What to visit
For those visiting our Island, we recommend Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint, a recently remodelled observatory first built in 1950, from which you can enjoy a breath-taking panoramic view of the city of Funchal and its bay with the Desertas islands on the horizon.
Levada dos Piornais is the 10 kilometre footpath of the old aqueduct which played an important role in Madeira’s history since it carried water to places where it was least available for the irrigation of crops, as a driving force for cereal mills and to the wash-houses where washer-women washed not only their own family’s clothes but also those of wealthier families as their livelihood. The path passes by and allows you to see some less densely populated areas as well as urban areas and the banana plantations.
